AY 2026-27 ITR Filing Is Live: 7 Checks to Finish Before You Click Submit
As of 20 July 2026, the Income Tax Department e-Filing portal shows that ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3 and ITR-4 for AY 2026-27 are live, and online as well as offline filing is enabled. The portal home page also shows that the Excel utilities of ITR-5 and ITR-7 are available. That is a good signal to prepare carefully instead of rushing the final submit step.
For most taxpayers, return errors do not start with the submit button. They start earlier: wrong form selection, incomplete AIS review, missing deduction details, invalid bank account information, or late verification. A short review before filing can reduce refund delays, notices and repeat work.
1. Confirm that you are using the correct ITR form
The portal may be live, but the correct form still depends on your income profile. Salaried taxpayers with simpler income may fall under ITR-1, while capital gains, multiple house properties, foreign assets, business income, directorship, unlisted shares, partnership income or other special cases may push the return into ITR-2, ITR-3 or another form. Filing with the wrong form can lead to a defective return and unnecessary follow-up.
2. Reconcile Form 16, AIS, TIS and Form 26AS together
The Income Tax Department’s AIS guidance makes an important distinction: Form 26AS mainly shows TDS and TCS data, while AIS carries broader information such as SFT entries, tax payments, demand or refund details and other reported information. That means Form 16 alone is not enough if you want a clean return.
- Match salary and TDS with Form 16.
- Check AIS for bank interest, dividends, securities transactions or other entries.
- Use Form 26AS to confirm tax credit visibility.
- Review TIS as the summary view before finalising figures.
3. Do not skip deduction-level disclosures
The current ITR-1 online help pages make it clear that several deduction claims need more than a single amount entry. For example, the portal asks for additional details for deductions such as 80C, 80CCD, 80D, 80E, 80EE, 80EEA, 80EEB, 80G, 80DD, 80U and 80GG, depending on the claim. If you are claiming deductions, keep the underlying document numbers, insurer names, PRAN, donation details, loan information or form acknowledgements ready before filing.
4. Keep your refund bank account clean and active
If a refund is expected, bank account errors can create avoidable delays. The ITR filing user manual reminds taxpayers to ensure that the bank account is pre-validated so refunds can be credited properly. Before submission, check the account number, IFSC, account status and whether the intended refund account is active on the portal.
5. Plan the e-verification step before filing
An uploaded return is not safely complete until it is verified. The Department’s current e-Verify guidance states that the time limit for e-verification or ITR-V submission is 30 days from the date of filing. If verification happens after 30 days, the date of e-verification or ITR-V submission can be treated as the date of furnishing the return, and late-filing consequences may follow where applicable. In practice, it is much better to keep Aadhaar OTP, net banking, EVC or DSC readiness in place before you file.
6. Know the backup timeline if you discover a mistake later
The Income Tax Department’s AY 2026-27 return FAQs currently state that a belated return may be filed up to 31 December 2026, subject to the law and completion of assessment. The same FAQ also states that a revised return for AY 2026-27 can be filed before 31 March 2027, or before completion of assessment, whichever is earlier. In addition, the ITR-1 online help notes that if a revised return is filed after 31 December and up to 31 March of the relevant AY, an additional fee under section 234I may apply.
That does not mean taxpayers should relax. It simply means that if you later discover a genuine omission, there is an official correction path. Filing carefully the first time is still the cheaper and cleaner route.
7. Take one last pre-submit document snapshot
Before clicking submit, keep these in one place:
- PAN, Aadhaar-linked access and portal login credentials.
- Form 16 or business books, as applicable.
- AIS, TIS and Form 26AS downloaded close to filing time.
- Bank interest certificates, dividend and capital gains statements.
- Deduction proofs and related form acknowledgements, where needed.
- Validated bank account chosen for refund.
- E-verification method readiness: Aadhaar OTP, bank EVC, net banking or DSC.
