How to e-Verify Your ITR: Available Methods and the 30-Day Deadline

Submitting an income tax return is only part of the filing process. The return must also be verified for the filing process to be completed. If verification is missed or delayed, the return may not be treated as properly filed and the taxpayer may need to take additional action.

According to the Income Tax Department’s e-Verify user manual, taxpayers can verify an income tax return through several electronic methods. The applicable method depends on the taxpayer’s Aadhaar, bank account, demat account, net-banking access or digital-signature setup.

Why is ITR verification important?

Verification confirms that the return was submitted by the taxpayer or with the taxpayer’s approval. Until the return is verified, processing, refunds and other follow-up actions may be delayed.

What is the time limit for e-verification?

The Income Tax Department states that, for returns filed on or after 1 August 2022, the time limit for e-verification or submission of ITR-V is 30 days from the date of filing the return. It is usually best to verify immediately after filing rather than waiting until the deadline approaches.

Methods available to e-Verify an ITR

  • Aadhaar OTP: Available when PAN is linked with Aadhaar and the taxpayer can access the Aadhaar-registered mobile number.
  • Bank account EVC: Uses an Electronic Verification Code through a pre-validated and EVC-enabled bank account.
  • Demat account EVC: Uses an EVC through a pre-validated and EVC-enabled demat account.
  • Net Banking: Available through supported banks when PAN is linked with the bank account and net banking is enabled.
  • Bank ATM EVC: An offline EVC-generation option available through supported bank ATMs.
  • Digital Signature Certificate: Commonly used where a valid and active DSC is available and the required utility is properly configured.

What should you check before verification?

Keep the ITR acknowledgement number available, confirm that your contact and account details are current, and ensure that the selected verification method is active. For Aadhaar OTP, confirm PAN-Aadhaar linkage and access to the registered mobile number. For bank or demat EVC, confirm that the account is pre-validated and EVC-enabled.

How to confirm successful verification

After completing the verification process, save the confirmation or acknowledgement for your records. You can also review the return status on the Income Tax e-Filing portal to confirm that verification is complete.
