ITR Filing for AY 2026-27: What Taxpayers Should Check Before Filing

The Income Tax e-Filing portal has started enabling return filing utilities for Assessment Year 2026-27. As per the official portal, ITR-1, ITR-2 and ITR-4 are live, and online as well as offline filing options are available for eligible taxpayers.

Before filing your income tax return, it is worth taking a few minutes to check whether your documents, income details and tax credits are complete. A careful review can help avoid mismatch notices, refund delays and unnecessary correction work later.

1. Choose the correct ITR form

Not every taxpayer can use ITR-1. For example, ITR-1 is generally meant for eligible resident individuals with simpler income profiles, while ITR-2 or ITR-4 may apply depending on capital gains, business income, presumptive income, foreign assets or other conditions. Choosing the wrong form can lead to filing errors or defective return notices.

2. Match Form 16, AIS and Form 26AS

For salaried taxpayers, Form 16 is important, but it should not be the only document checked. Compare salary income, TDS, interest income, dividend income and other reported items with AIS and Form 26AS before filing. If something looks incorrect, review the source and take action before submitting the return.

3. Keep deduction proofs ready

If you are claiming deductions or exemptions, keep supporting documents ready. Common examples include insurance receipts, investment proofs, home loan interest certificates, donation receipts, rent-related documents and medical insurance payment proofs, depending on your facts and chosen tax regime.

4. Check bank account and refund details

Refund processing can be delayed if the bank account is not valid, not pre-validated or not linked properly on the portal. Review your bank account details before filing, especially if you changed accounts during the year.

5. Verify the return after filing

Filing is not complete until the return is verified. Use the available e-verification options on the Income Tax portal after submission. An unverified return can create avoidable compliance issues.
